Acceptable Use of the Internet at West Vancouver Memorial Library

Users of the Internet must respect the legal protection provided by copyright and licensing of programs and data.

WVML computers are located in public areas shared by library users of all ages, backgrounds, and sensibilities; individuals are asked to consider other library users when accessing the Internet from public workstations.

Users must not violate the privacy of another user or library patron.

Users are not to install software or run any program on WVML equipment that has not been installed by WVML staff. Users should not develop or use programs that infiltrate a computer or computer system and/or damage or alter the software components of a local or remote computer or computing system. No alteration, damage or destruction of the library’s computer hardware is permitted.

Users may use only their own library card and must not use another individual’s library card or multiple library cards.

Users must not use any WVML workstation for illegal, actionable, or criminal purpose, including ”hacking” or harassing other users locally or remotely, nor may they seek access into any unauthorized areas.

Users must not seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, other data, or passwords belonging to other users. Users should not represent themselves as another user.

WVML is not responsible for any fees incurred by use of the Internet.

WVML cannot guarantee security and confidentiality of any transaction, particularly e-commerce transactions.

Staff Assistance

Staff will assist library patrons with Internet both one-on-one and in group training sessions. Self-help training sheets and books will be available to the public.

Patrons using public Internet workstations must accept the following Disclaimer and Conditions of Use

The Library supports patrons’ rights to have access to all expressions of knowledge, creativity, and intellectual activity in accordance with the Canadian Library Association’s Statement on Intellectual Freedom.

Please note that a broad range of material is available over the Internet. West Vancouver Memorial Library does not take responsibility for its accuracy, timeliness, or appropriateness.

Users are responsible for materials that are accessed. As with access to all other library materials, staff does not act in the place of a parent or guardian to restrict what a child might access on the Internet.

Use of this station for illegal, actionable or criminal purposes or to seek access into unauthorized areas is prohibited. Infringement of copyright is prohibited. The West Vancouver Memorial Library assumes no responsibility for any direct or indirect damage arising from the use of its connection to Internet services.

Failure to cooperate with staff and other patrons in using this station or to follow acceptable use policies of the Library may result in temporary or permanent loss of Library or Internet privileges.

  Internet Access Cards

If you would like to use our Internet Stations but are not eligible for a West Vancouver Memorial Library card, you can obtain an Internet Access card at the Registration Desk.

The Internet Access card allows the holder to use the Library's public Internet stations; it does not include borrowing or remote database privileges. To register, one piece of personal ID should be shown (address ID is not essential.) The card expires one year after the date of registration. A parent's signature on the application is required for anyone under 14 years of age. Internet Access cards from other libraries can also be registered here. There is no charge for Internet Access cards.
